Michael Hempseed has spoken extensively throughout New Zealand to a wide and varied range of audiences, such as Fonterra, NZ Post and the New Zealand Defence Force medics. He speaks on the topics of suicide prevention, understanding mental illness, de-escalation, healing the wounds of trauma and the importance of sleep. In 2019 he delivered almost 200 seminars throughout NZ.
Although he speaks on “dark topics” the participants at his seminars say they walk away feeling inspired and hopeful.
Many non-professionals come to Michael's seminars and they say they learn a lot. But, professionals and experts in the field, such as medical doctors, psychologists and counsellors, also say they learn a lot and they are exposed to research they did not know about.
He is often called in to speak to communities devastated by suicide, tragic deaths such as car crashes and more. He is exceptionally careful to deliver all his workshops in a way that is sensitive and aware that many members of the audience have been through a lot
Michael's book Being A True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community, has been used by the New Zealand Police, they placed a copy in every custody suite in New Zealand.
